Mama’s go-go juice

by Sheridan Lane, director, culinary program and operations, Lincoln Land Community College

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it is time to put your plan for the day into action. Absolutely spoil the mama in your world everyday but especially on May 12!

What better way to do it than with her favorite “go-go juice” — a term coined from Honey Boo Boo’s mom, Shannon, which aired on TLC’s Season 5 of “Toddlers in Tiaras.” While the controversial reality show spawned a whole host of debates too long to mention, and the original go-go juice recipe combines Red Bull and Mountain Dew (not exactly my beverage of choice), a curated assortment of go-go juices is worth a smile this Mother’s Day. At the very least, it might be just a small way to say, “thank you” for the millions of little things moms do that usually go unnoticed.

Since I don’t believe go-go juice is an official term, feel free to use your own interpretation as it applies to the person you are celebrating. Whether it’s the kind of beverage that makes you move a little faster with a little more energy and focus or it’s a matter of convenience and need for something on-the-go, there is much to choose from in the modern era of the beverage world.

Believe it or not, the packaged beverage industry is over two centuries old. Schweppe’s started bottling carbonated water in the late 1700s; sodas like Dr Pepper, Coca Cola and Pepsi got their starts in the late 1800s; and even packaged cocktails made their debut about the same time with the classic Pimm’s Cup.

As of late, the RTD/RTS industry, which refers to “ready to drink” or “ready to serve” cocktails, has exploded on the shelves and in popularity according to Fortune Business Insights. Plus, significant continued growth is projected over the next few years.

Red-eye coffee, protein shakes, sparkling waters or canned cocktails — what does the mom in your life enjoy when ramping up for a busy day, refueling after expending max energy, hydrating while on the go or winding down without an effort? Whatever the case may be, thinking about what your mama does during her daily hustle that deserves a little appreciation is certain to earn you a wink and a hug.

Then also set aside some time to take your mom to enjoy a go-go juice in person because at the end of the day, she probably just really wants a little quality time with you. Whether at a coffee shop, a mocktail stop, the local pub, a brewery/winery or your favorite restaurant, certainly raise a go-go juice to moms and all they do for you.
