LLCC designated as a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Security

LLCC received the prestigious Center for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (CAE-2Y) designation November  20, 2019. Representing LLCC, Dr. Carmen Allen, professor of computer science, accepted the award in Phoenix, Ariz.  This designation is received after meeting rigorous requirements set forth by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The CAE-2Y designation reflects LLCC’s commitment to educate and prepare cybersecurity professionals to reduce vulnerabilities in our national infrastructure.

In Episode 8, Dr. Carmen Allen, professor of computer science, was interviewed by the LLCC Public Relations and Marketing to provide information about academic programs in computer science and cybersecurity as well current technology trends.

October 2019

Dr. Carmen Allen, professor of computer science, recently attended the National Science Foundation/Advanced Technology Education (NSF/ATE) Conference in Washington, D.C. She shared information in the grant showcase on LLCC’s competency-based education (CBE) cybersecurity grant and program.

October 2019

Dr. Carmen Allen, professor of computer science, served as a community panelist to discuss pertinent cyber security issues and the use of social media. The panel discussion, moderated by Jim Leach of News/Talk 94.7 & 970 WMAY, also included Bethany Bilyeu, Psy.D., L.C.P.C., director, UIS Counseling Center; Siobhan Johnson, deputy director of human resources, Illinois Department of Public Health; and Shane Overby, detective, Springfield Police Department. The event was held at the Thorne Deuel Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum from 6-7:30 p.m.  The theme was part of the “Finding Truth in the Age of Alternative Facts” hosted by LLCC’s Academy of Lifelong Learning and the Illinois State Museum.

Dr. Carmen Allen, interim dean of business and computer technology, was interviewed by WICS/FOX Illinois in "Alexa is recording your voice: Here's how to listen"  about cybersecurity and privacy issues related to voice-controlled technology.

October 2018

Dr. Carmen Allen, interim dean of business and computer technology, presented at a panel discussion, “P-20 Considerations in Designing and Implementing Competency-Based Education.” The development of the LLCC’s Competency Based Education (CBE) Cyber-Security certificate was described.

Spring 2018

LLCC Public Relations and Marketing published "Protecting your online information: LLCC offers new cybersecurity program and public workshops" describing the importance of security in today's digital world and  cybersecurity education opportunities at LLCC.

Spring 2018

LLCC instructors provided a presentation about how to secure home computers and protect digital identity at a Spring Security Awareness Day public workshop.

Fall 2017

Mike Kokal, End of the Road podcaster, interviewed Darrell Fortae, owner of Everlast Software and teacher of Cybersecurity at LLCC's Capital City Training Center.  The podcast segment was “Cyber Security Recommendations for Small Businesses” in which Darrell addressed phishing attacks, ransomware, and other cyber threats to small businesses.

Spring 2017

An LLCC faculty member was interviewed for a State Journal-Register video feature and article: "Experts: Network security requires 24-7 vigilance" which described global cyberattacks and how businesses and individuals can provide protections.

Spring 2017

An LLCC faculty member was interviewed in this WCIA Channel 3 News video feature: How individuals can protect themselves from hackers, which described concerns about a nationwide Equifax data breach.
