Types of Aid

There are four basic types of aid — grants, scholarships, loans and federal work study. Grants and scholarships are forms of financial assistance that do not have to be repaid. Loans are federally funded sources of assistance that must be repaid with interest. The Federal Work Study (FWS) program is an employment program funded by the federal government. Students qualify for this program on the basis of financial need as determined by their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Grants

All grants have different eligibility requirements, and they are awarded based on demonstrated financial need. They don’t need to be repaid.

Scholarships

They essentially provide free money that does not need to be repaid. The support dollars awarded help pay for a student's education.

Loans

Loans provide money you can borrow from federally funded sources of assistance that must be repaid with interest.

Federal Work Study

This need-based program provides opportunities for eligible students to work part-time through on-campus employment. Earnings can help pay for a student's education.
