Employment and education:
Jason is the sports editor for the Hobbs News-Sun in Hobbs, New Mexico. After 11 years in the U.S. Navy, Jason enrolled at LLCC where he earned his Associate in Arts with a journalism emphasis. Following LLCC he continued his studies at Blackburn College and earned his bachelor's degree in communication.
How has Lincoln Land Community College impacted your life?
LLCC got me back on track and focused to return to school and graduate.
What have been some obstacles you have had to overcome in pursuit of your educational and/or career goals?
Trying to go to school full-time while having a wife and kids at home.
What is your greatest accomplishment(s)?
- Graduating from college with my BA.
- Covering the 2013 and 2014 MLB World Series and the 2014 and 2015 MLB All Star Game.
Was there a professor, advisor, staff member or fellow student who made an impression on you or helped you when you were here at LLCC?
My LLCC journalism professor, Brenda Protz. I had a complicated schedule with family life and Professor Protz found ways to work with my schedule so that I could be on The Lamp staff.
Who or what has served as a source of inspiration for you?
My high school journalism and college journalism instructors. High school, Wayne Thallender; LLCC, Brenda Protz; Blackburn College, David Curtis and Natasha Casey.
What advice do you have for current or future LLCC students?
Never give up! If you want something, hard work does pay off. Reach for your goals!
What did you like about LLCC or what is your favorite LLCC memory?
Attending the journalism awards conference in Chicago and winning my first award for writing and then getting another award the following year.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
After eight years of active military duty and three deployments, adjusting back to civilian life was difficult, but LLCC helped make the transition easier.
