Denmark Mahilom’s journey to LLCC begins in the Philippines where he was born. At age 15, he moved with his family to Beardstown. At the time, he could understand some English but wasn’t used to speaking it. Three days after arriving, he enrolled at Beardstown High School and despite initial language challenges, eventually became active in Key Club, Business Club and several sports teams. Looking to attend college, he was accepted at UIUC, “but my parents convinced me starting at LLCC was the best choice; it’s less expensive, but you still get the full college experience.” He moved to Springfield so he could be active on campus. He works in the LLCC Student Life office and can be seen helping with many student activities. He’s leaning toward a major in psychology and an eventual career in sports science. “LLCC is definitely the best place if you’re trying to figure out what your major is going to be, if you want to save money and get a great education. It feels like you’re at a university. It makes me happy to see students want to get involved like I do. It’s fun! I was actually involved in so much, I was having trouble finding time to study. The LLCC Center for Academic Success helped me get better organized, taught me when and how to study. I tell students, if you need help, talk to your success coach or contact the Center for Academic Success. LLCC will get you where you want to be!”
